Ways to Save Water in State's Drought

Gov. Jerry Brown has proclaimed that California is officially in a drought. In fact, the state is in the midst of perhaps its worst dry spell in a century.

The Paramount Water Department suggests the following ideas to save water:

* When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

* Soak your pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.

* Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full and you could save 1,000 gallons a month.

Paramount's Salud Park Hailed as "Success" by Urban Planners

The City of Paramount's "To Your Health!" Salud Park, newly opened and located at the corner of Texaco St. and Somerset Blvd., features exercise stations, walking/running paths and tracks, and a plaza for yoga, pilates and zumba classes.

It provides the residents of Paramount with a "free outdoor gym," available for use seven days a week.

Salud Park was built on ten acres of Southern California Edison right-of-way property. Working closely with SCE, the City was able to produce a first-class facility of attractive open space in an urban area with little available land for new parks.

City Fabrick is a nonprofit urban design studio in Long Beach with a special focus on creative approaches to expanding open space. According to City Fabrick Executive Director Brian Ulaszewski, Salud Park is a great example of the kinds of projects the firm has been promoting, and "incredibly relevant to our work." Ulaszewski has written a blog posting about the park on the company's website. The article can be found at

Public Comment Period for Proposed Materials Recovery Facility

The City of Paramount Community Development Department is reviewing a conditional use permit that would allow the operation of a materials recovery facility in town. Part of that process includes a 45-day public comment period which begins on October 2, 2014.

The project site consists of 7.32 acres and is located along the north side of Petterson Lane, west of Garfield Ave. The site's legal address is 14001 Garfield Ave. The proposed use will occupy a number of existing buildings that have a total floor area of 146,600 square feet. In addition, a new "receiving building" consisting of 39,500 square feet will be constructed. The total floor area of the existing and new buildings will be 186,000 square feet. The proposed project will receive, process, and transfer source separated recyclables, residential curbside recycling materials, and municipal solid waste. The proposed facility will consist of a recyclable material recovery facility (MRF), a sorting area where recyclables will be removed, a transfer station with a residual waste load-out area, balers, a bale storage area, and offices. All material receiving and processing activities will occur within the buildings. The maximum permitted processing capacity will be 2,450 tons per day.
